A few more of Chicago’s markets open this week, including the Daley and Federal Plaza markets and the Division Street market. Today’s Green City Market lettuce extravaganza might have you wondering what to do with all of those irresistible greens. The Green City Market is returning to its familiar outdoor format. Tomorrow’s market, at the south end of Lincoln Park near the History Museum, will feature both a celebration of the Market’s 11th season and a celebration of lettuce. If you frequent the Green City Market, you know who Paula Haney is. She’s the Hoosier behind Hoosier Mama Pie Company. Paula’s company recently opened its first brick-and-mortar store, a cozy storefront decorated with old pie tins and recipe booklets. A quote by Isaac Asimov (about apple pie, naturally) is written on a mirror [...] Caramelized on the outside but moist and chewy on the inside, these little cakes from Bordeaux have a unique, delicate flavor. If you missed them at the market and are looking for something to do inside this week, you can make cannelés at home. Saturday is the last winter Green City Market. Alice Waters, of Chez Panisse, will attend the outdoor market and will sign copies of her book from 10:30 to 11:30, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Stew blog. |
